Stages of a Home Addition
1. Planning
During the planning stage, we find out what you want to get from the home addition, and what is possible based on the existing structure of the home, the Alberta Building Code, zoning requirements, and your desired budget. We translate the dream into an actionable plan and coordinate with the engineers and designers to bring it all together.
2. Permits
Depending on how extensive the home addition is you may require multiple permits. There is always some waiting involved, but the process is much faster when we do our due diligence to make sure the information we are submitting to the City is accurate and complete. Once the permits are in place we are set to begin the project.
3. Demolition
A careful and methodical demolition allows us to tie back into the existing structure as we build out the new section(s) of your home. It is important to maintain the structural integrity of the home and not disrupt any systems that we want to keep in place (plumbing, electrical, heating, etc.)
4. Project Selections
This is one of the more exciting stages and it is one that you likely started a long time ago by pinning your favorite floor coverings on Pinterest and creating a look-book on Houzz. As you make product selections for each element of the project you benefit by having access to our trusted suppliers. Get the best materials at a reasonable cost. Have fun choosing your flooring, paint colors, cabinets, appliances and more!
5. Rebuild
The rebuild is another exciting stage because you get to see your dream come to life. Watch as the new framing and drywall is installed, then see the space transform with new materials until it is exactly how you envisioned it during the planning stage. We focus on maintaining a safe workspace and we will make sure you always know what is happening in your home.
6. The Presentation
Now that your home addition is complete it is time to show it off. We will be documenting the process as we go along with pictures to track the renovation process. When the job is complete we bring in a professional photographer to capture the true essence of the home with stunning photographs.
Popular Home Additions in Calgary
Front Extension
Front yards were a popular feature for many Calgary homes throughout the 70’s and 80’s when the city was experiencing significant population growth. As a result, many of the now “inner-city” suburbs have massive front lawns that present the perfect opportunity for a front extension. Home design trends at the time generally called for a front entrance that leads into a living room, with a kitchen shortly thereafter on the main floor. With a front home extension, it is possible to move your living room into the new space and expand the footprint of the kitchen. An open-concept kitchen/living room/TV room is becoming more and more popular.
Second Story Addition
You’ll see in the newest communities that many of the homes are two levels, built to maximize the square footage. In most cases this means that the upper level matches the footprint of the main level. In older communities this is rarely the case. There are many bungalows and homes with a partial upper level. It is now becoming popular to add a second level, or extend the existing second level, to add additional living space. These home additions have incredible potential for increasing the overall square footage of your home. Some popular second-level features are a master ensuite, a laundry room, and a bonus room or TV room.
The Garage Suite
Due to the zoning in many Calgary communities is possible to have a secondary suite. In some cases above the garage is the most appropriate location. Garage suites are generally separated from the rest of the house offering an independent suite with maximum privacy. They are popular for renters and as mother-in-law suites. What a great way to make use of a space that is so often overlooked!

We had our bathroom flooring removed and new flooring installed in all three bathrooms plus some other items upgraded. They did a great job and we were very pleased with the quality of the work, and also that they came every single day until the job was done. 2 weeks start to finish.
