This project included a sizeable addition, adding space to both the main and second levels. This made way for additional bedrooms and a bonus room on the second level with a stunning brand new kitchen on the main floor.
The natural finishes make this house one-of-a-kind. The beautiful long-plank engineered floors mirror the raw natural beauty of the wood-panel ceiling. The manufactured stone wall brings more of the outdoors in, completing the rustic farmhouse feel.
The natural elements are contrasted by the modern cabinetry and luxury stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen.
Just south of Calgary, along the Sheep River, you’ll find Alberta’s largest small town. Okotoks has a population of nearly 30,000 and is continuing to grow as a popular place to raise a family or enjoy a quiet retirement. It has a rich history and offers the full beauty of the rolling foothills with a rocky mountain backdrop. There is something for everyone with many new suburban-style communities, acreages, homesteads and farms spread over nearly 20 square kilometres. Our story takes us to an acreage on the outskirts of town – close enough to enjoy the modern amenities, but far enough away for a feeling of complete peace and serenity.
Nestled in the rolling hills along a quiet secondary road sits an acreage with a quaint mustard-yellow home and a large garage. As you pass through the front gates it is as though you are stepping into a new world, free from the fast-paced stress and noise of a busy town. A golden retriever sits on the front porch, dutifully watching the children as they play on a large open lawn. Their laughter is the only sound. There is a cool breeze. You can almost smell the fresh pines from the nearby mountains. This is the essence of country living. Who would ever want to leave? Instead, this growing family decided to add-on to their home, ensuring enough comfort and space for years to come.

The home addition was built level with the house and extended back over a sloped area of the yard. We built-up the floor over the sloped area using extremely sturdy posts and then tied-in the beams to the existing structure. A new deck was framed-in at the same time. The area beneath the addition and deck was enclosed with treated plywood and now serves as a crawl-space for additional storage.
Special attention was given to the building envelope at all of the tie-in points to ensure that there would be no water-penetration or air leakage. Once the framing and roof were complete the addition was wrapped and the windows were installed in preparation for the exterior finishes.

The most fun with any home addition comes from designing and finishing the new interior space. This is where homeowners have a chance to go through their Pinterest boards and lookbooks on Houzz to decide what style they want and which materials they will use. The material selections for this project were truly unique. Manufactured stone was chosen for the walls surrounding the new kitchen area, with natural wood floors and ceilings. The rustic hanging light fixtures added to the natural materials for an old-world feel. The custom white cabinetry had a more modern design and created additional storage and counter space with a granite peninsula.
